African American Family Services
(AAFS) feels that continued
emphasis must be placed on community-based aftercare support.
Getting out of treatment and transitioning back into the community
is only the beginning. Aftercare support is the key to the
development of quality sobriety in people recovering from chemical
dependency.
All groups are based on an abstinence model of recovery. Clients
come together as a group to explore cultural experiences relating to
their chemical dependency without the fear of alienation and
cultural adjustment that may exist in a predominantly non-Black
setting.
AAFS helps clients locate AA, NA and CA groups for those
searching for twelve-step groups to join. AAFS also helps family
members who want to be involved find Alanon groups and makes
referrals to AAFS's family support and education groups.
AAFS has early sobriety, relapse prevention and aftercare support
groups. Groups offered are adult and adolescent, co-ed and gender
specific. A pre-group screening is necessary prior to joining.
Aftercare case management is also available. The AAFS aftercare
program is a unique individualized program that addresses the
specific needs and issues of each client.
